Van Aert Conquers Roubaix Chaos, Outsprints Pogačar in Hell of the North

RACE REPORT: The Hell of the North delivered exactly what we expect—and then some. In one of the most chaotic and attritional editions in recent memory, Wout van Aert finally claimed his long-awaited Paris-Roubaix victory, outkicking Tadej Pogačar in a two-man showdown on the Roubaix velodrome. Behind them, punctures, crashes, and bad luck reshuffled the script, leaving Mathieu van der Poel to chase shadows and settle for fourth on a day when survival was as important as strength.

PEZ Crew Calls It

Last night I sent an email to the boys  – simply saying:

“Who do we like?
Methinks Pogi is gonna do it, with a challenge from Van Aert.
Thoughts?”

The answers were almost unanimous – Pogacar for odds on fave to win, but Wout as the sentimental choice.

A Race Defined by Chaos and Cobbles

From the moment the peloton left Compiègne, the tone was set—fast, aggressive, and unforgiving. The 259-kilometre route packed in thirty cobbled sectors, including the legendary Arenberg Forest, Mons-en-Pévèle, and Carrefour de l’Arbre.

Early breakaways never gained much traction, but the race began to fracture as soon as the favourites hit the pavé. Mechanical problems and punctures started to dictate the race narrative as much as tactics.

Pogačar and Van der Poel Hit Trouble

The first major twist came when Pogačar punctured, forcing the world champion into a long chase—at one point even riding a neutral service bike before getting back onto his team machine.

Then came disaster for Van der Poel. Multiple punctures in the Arenberg sector dropped him over two minutes behind, effectively ending his chances of a fourth Roubaix win.

Despite a strong chase, the Dutchman was left playing catch-up for the rest of the day.

The Race Explodes at 60km to Go

With the race constantly reshaping, the decisive move came inside the final 60 kilometres. Van Aert surged clear, Pogačar responded—and countered.

The two strongest riders of the day quickly distanced the rest, including Mads Pedersen, forming a clear lead pair. Behind, chasers including Van der Poel and Filippo Ganna struggled to organize, their efforts disrupted by crashes and flats.

Mano a Mano to the Velodrome

Through Mons-en-Pévèle and Carrefour de l’Arbre, Pogačar repeatedly tried to break Van Aert—but the Belgian never cracked, glued to his rival’s wheel.

The gap behind hovered between 20 and 40 seconds—close enough to keep the pressure on, but not enough to bring the chasers back into contention.

Van Aert Delivers the Knockout Blow

Into Roubaix, the script was set: a two-man sprint for one of cycling’s biggest prizes.

Van Aert refused to contribute in the final kilometres, forcing Pogačar to lead. Then, with half a lap remaining, he launched—hard and decisive.

The gap opened instantly. Pogačar had no answer.

After years of near-misses, Van Aert finally stood atop the Roubaix podium.

The Rest of the Story

Jasper Stuyven sprinted to third, while Van der Poel salvaged fourth after a day of relentless bad luck.

For Pogačar, second place marked his first defeat of the 2026 season—but also confirmed he can contend at Roubaix.

For Van Aert, it was redemption—and validation—on cycling’s most brutal stage.

PEZ Takeaways

  • Van Aert finally wins his long-awaited cobbled Monument
  • Pogačar proves he can race—and nearly win—Roubaix
  • Van der Poel undone by mechanicals, not legs
